Single Female House Owners

Even up to a few years ago, it was extremely rare for a single woman to purchase her own house. Whilst it may have been unthinkable years ago, in todays society a lot of females now have the financial security to be able to purchase a house of their own. Looking at the statistics, there is a steady growth and increase in popularity for single professional women to invest in their house.

The disparity over the years has moved women away from the conventional, uneducated, stay at home wife and mother. Even though there still isn’t full gender equality, young women, just like boys, if they are bright enough, go to universities and have a brilliant chance to become successful lawyers, doctors or anything they want to be.

Rather than just take my word for it, let’s have a look at a couple of current polls. There were 44% of women who believe that financial security and house ownership go hand in hand, stated in the 3rd annual TD Canada Trust Women and Home Ownership Poll, at the end of 2009. That shows a 21 percent rise from 2008. Another benefit of home ownership was not having to paying rent, this came in as the second most received answer. 38 percent of females voted for this option. Again we are seeing an increase since the poll in 2008, this option had risen from 13%.

The typical age of a first time home buyer is said to be 29, of which greater than 80% are single women, according to the IPSOS-Reid poll. Looking at the figures in greater detail, we also observe that 80% of those women have no children and half have got university degrees.

As a (female) Toronto real estate agent I know Whilst this may seems good news, other news doesn’t look so good. Gender equality with regards to earnings is not as it could be, and women are still getting lesser money for the exact same post. Statistics still show that women investing in homes by themselves have more chance of running into difficulties, such as paying off a mortgage, than their male counterparts or if they were part of a married couple.
